THE author of Bumface, Aristotle's Nostril and Misery Guts put himself at the mercy of his discerning readers in Newcastle yesterday.

Morris Gleitzman is one of five children's book authors and illustrators visiting the city's libraries to celebrate Book Week.

"Writing is a very introverted thing, while doing talks and meeting children is the opposite, I have to be extroverted," Gleitzman said.

"As much as I love the imaginative process of writing at home, I'd go troppo if I did it all year."

Gleitzman uses the time with his fans to obtain feedback.

"Kids are very honest, there's none of that adult stuff that goes on at literary festivals," he said.

"If they don't like something, you know about it."

Newcastle Regional Libraries spokeswoman Carol Edmonds said visiting authors used the interaction with children to stay in touch with what young readers liked.

"We would have one of the biggest Book Week celebrations in the state," Mrs Edmonds said.

Author Colin Thompson is due to be at Wallsend Library today at 6pm.

Thompson won the Children's Picture Book of the Year award last week.

Others in town this week are Bananas in Pajamas script writer Richard Tulloch, actress and author Sofie Laguna and illustrator Di Wu.
